Frenand Léger is a Canadian citizen of Haitian origin, born in Port-au-Prince. His mother and father are originally from the Southern city of Les Cayes. After completing his primary education at the Frères du Sacré-Cœur School in Les Cayes, he returned to Port-au-Prince, where he did almost all of his secondary studies at the Lycée de Pétion-Ville. During school vacations, he would go back to Les Cayes. While in high school, he often visited the library of the Institut Français, which at the time was located on Boulevard du Bicentenaire. This experience nurtured his passion for books and literature. After secondary school, he pursued studies in educational sciences at Quisqueya University in Port-au-Prince, where he also worked as an educational supervisor on several international NGO projects. He also taught French in various secondary schools in the capital. This is how his teaching career began.

Once he completed his bachelor’s degree in education, he went abroad to continue his university studies. He began a master’s degree in education at the University of Montreal, but later switched to a master’s in applied linguistics at Indiana University in the United States. After that degree, he was offered a teaching position in French and Haitian Creole at the University of The Bahamas, where he taught for four years. As his dream had always been to continue his studies, he returned to Canada in 2010 to pursue a PhD. In 2016, he earned his doctorate in French literature from the University of Toronto. That same year, he was hired by Carleton University in Ottawa to teach and coordinate French courses. He has since earned tenure as a teaching professor of French studies.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

  1. Teaching project in progress

    • I am working with other colleagues from multiple Canadian universities on the creation of a series of textbooks based on the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and that take into consideration the great diversity of the French language and cultures throughout Canada and the world. The textbooks will be published by Canadian Scholars’ Press.
       

    • Also working with a colleague from John Hopkins University on a set of two advanced Haitian Creole language textbooks for Higher education.
       

  2. ​Research projects in progress

    • As a researcher in Francophone studies, I am finalizing a monograph that examines interactions between Creole orality and French writing in Haitian novels and short stories. It concentrates on a body of fictional literary texts written by major Haitian novelists and short story writers from the nineteenth century to the present day. The goal of this project is to theorize Haiti’s literary genre called “lodyans.”
